Do you ever feel like you need to take your personal scent to the next level? Layering, or blending, is for the Skins fan who wants to kick it up a notch, and experiment with something totally original and unique.
Our team of experts is here to guide you through the process of finding your own bespoke essence, and although it is very much up to personal taste, there are a few guidelines you need to keep in mind.
The best place to start is with your favourite fragrance, and then look for a second scent that either strengthens or soothes its top notes. Play around - don’t be shy - but typically you should spray your fragrance in order of intensity. Start with the stronger, heavier fragrance, and then layer the more delicate scent over it at the end.
“Combining scents is like combining colour on a colour wheel. I try to get either really similar scents that mirror closely together, or ones that really contrast” says Daniel Dutton, a fragrance expert from Dyptique.
A fragrance that is linear in structure will be considered a solid base to work with. What this means is that what you smell at first spritz lasts until the fragrance dries on your skin, without changing. Woods, musks and ouds are good examples of this.
Layering will also help your fragrance last longer, says Alex Goddard, Training Manager at Acqua di Parma. It prevents your skin from absorbing all of the fragrance oils as quickly. “Fragrance will smell different on each of us and layering will reinforce the true smell of said fragrance”.
Serums, shower gels and body lotions are not exempt from this trend! With so many luxurious options available, you don’t need to compromise on quality, and you can still layer with many combinations of more affordable options.
