Orpheon – Symbol of the Left Bank, of creativity, friendship, festivity ... and of the birth of diptyquediptyque is a creative adventure from Saint-Germain, Paris, in 1960, the fruit of the friendship between three aesthetes with a passion for art. Three creative souls from different milieux and cultures: one an English painter, one a Parisian theatrical director, one an interior decorator. Out of their individual talents, passions and lasting friendship was born a shared Maison, diptyque. Following their intuitions, they did only what they loved – conveying a subtle, poetic expression of the spirit of those times.
Among these venues was the Orphéon, a late-night bar at the intersection of 34 boulevard Saint- Germain and the rue de Pontoise. The bar’s entrance was adjacent to the diptyque boutique. Here it was that Yves and Desmond, back from their latest trip, would meet with friends, sharing anecdotes.
A place of encounter, infused with the energy flowing freely through the quarter.
It was the quintessence of this place and this uniquely vibrant period, so rich in talent, that the three founders have successfully imparted to present-day diptyque: soul and spirit in equal measure.
In 2021, to celebrate 60 years of the Maison, diptyque will reopen the doors of Orphéon with an eau de parfum designed to plunge us right back in the effervescent atmosphere of that era. An immersive, eclectic locale, inviting you to be part of a one-of-a-kind creative experience – the kind diptyque has always loved.
Orpheon... inspired diptyque to give birth to a new Eau de ParfumA few years after opening the diptyque boutique, the Maison bought Orphéon to extend into its space. Today, the only remaining vestige from the Orphéon is the blue faceted column at the back of the boutique at 34 boulevard Saint-Germain..
A multicultural collaboration, an illustration inspired by the archives of the Maison
Gianpaolo Pagni was born in Italy but studied at the Beaux Arts in France. He plays with patterns and uses accumulation and repetition to bring out memories, metamorphosing objects and things of no value into extraordinary and mysterious signs.
diptyque has chosen to reinterpret a historical pattern designed by Desmond Knox-Leet, as a nod to diptyque’s beginnings. Indeed, when the founders opened the boutique at 34 boulevard Saint-Germain back in the early 1960’s, they first sold patterned fabrics.
diptyque & Gianpaolo Pagni reworked the original pattern to express not only the eclectic festive atmosphere of Orphéon, where the three founders spent much time, but also the encounters that were in the spirit of times and the beginning of the whole diptyque adventure.

The Scent of a Place in a Bottle
Orphéon Eau de Parfum is the olfactory portrait of the place.
Freeze frame : curls of tobacco smoke mingle with powdery trails of blusher, lingering on burnished wood. At the heart of the composition is the atmosphere of that unforgettable place, recognisable through the warmth of the tonka bean, the depth of cedar and the vivacity of juniper berries.
